The tooling got boring (in a good way)
The stack has matured: llama.cpp and its GGUF quantizations remain the foundation — the team even joined Hugging Face in February — while Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM, and SGLang handle serving with OpenAI-compatible APIs. An interesting counter-trend appeared in May when antirez (of Redis fame) shipped DS4, an inference engine built for a single model family, DeepSeek V4 Flash, hinting at a future of hyper-optimized engines alongside generalist ones.
Your desk is the new data center
Hardware keeps sinking downward. NPUs from Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, and Apple make small models a standard part of laptops and phones, and Apple Intelligence's system-wide 3B model shows mainstream on-device inference. Meanwhile, FP8 quantization and KV-cache compression push 100B+ parameter models onto single high-end consumer GPUs.
The math finally works
One report puts the break-even point for an RTX 5090 build at just one to three months of moderate API usage. For privacy-sensitive, high-volume, or latency-critical workloads, local inference has stopped being a compromise.
